Perla (from the series "7 women")
The portraits of seven Ethiopian women shot during the Italo-Ethiopian war (1935-36) are the starting point of this work. Since I've discovered those in a big roll of photos a friend of mine provided to me knowing my interest in the subject (my uncle was a soldier and an amateur photographer in that war), that seven women haunted me.
In spite of the colonial gaze that tried to capture them as exotic animals, they resist this act of appropriation.
I pair each of them with a wild urban plant located near a gate or a door: both resisting and both refusing of being and acting as expected, both haunting me.
