Different ways to wear a headscarf
verschiedene Arten ein Kopftuch zu tragen

Three years ago, I submitted some paintings to this theme.
It accompanied me all the past years up to now and I know, that this topic is still highly relevant and often discussed.

Meanwhile I realized a 27 – picture series with two extralarge sujets, which are all
drawn on a wacomtablet in the format 110 x 80 cm, realized 2014 as c-prints behind acrylicglass on dibond.

For the wearers often a subjective expression of their faith or simply a fashion accessory, this item of clothing has received emotional styling as a symbol of cultural conflict in our increasingly polarised society. Some interpret the wearing of this cloth as a reluctance to integrate or as an expression of political ideology; still others describe it as a “symbol of barriers” and as “the flag of Islamist crusaders.”
Prejudice against headscarves is often connected with mistrust towards foreign cultures and religions, and the latent reservations a vast majority of people have about the unknown is brutally taken advantage of by politicians, regardless of the consequences.

I show and demonstrate how headscarves can be worn in different ways, with me as the protagonist in all the image sequences.
These different ways – sometimes tied in front under the chin, knotted behind the neck, or covering the hair and the face, through to completely disguising or veiling the wearer - creates pictures of style icons from different cultural groups and unleashes a wide range of feelings and associations in the observers, who then concentrate them on assumptions about the personality of the wearer.

Any emotions that surface, usually founded in ignorance that fosters fear, defensiveness and rejection, are taken ad absurdum as the pictures always deal with the same person, i.e. me.

All the 10 selected artworks for CelestePrize 2014 - Section “Project” - are part of the
27 – peaces series.
