Each painting I make begins with a surface area (or ‘sheet’) at least four times the size of the finished product. This area may be a large un-stretched canvas on which I have painted fields of color or made a series of prints. In this painting, I created a white acrylic surface over which I made an inkjet print with large dots of color. I use these sheets to tear individual strips. I use the strips of canvas and fabric to create vertical and horizontal bands in a series of right angles, or a grid pattern, to build up the painting. Each strip is applied one over the other like a pyramid from biggest (thicker strips) to smallest (thinner strips.) The strips are wrapped around the support and secured to the back of the substrate. This is my system for painting. The result is a painting object.
