In Cityscape I wished to highlight the façadic nature of both culture and image. In this piece the nature of image itself is shown to be as brutal as the façades of the buildings depicted. Even the traditional, familiar devices of scale and perspective offer no haven, the illusion of depth is nothing but illusion. The awkwardness and limitation of image’s representation of reality is exposed, or more, the loss of something of reality is shown to be caused by the ever greater role image plays in its mediation. This painting reveals something of the violence of standardised cultural replication.
