Before I begun this painting, I spent two months drawings at Birling gap, a tiny cliffside hamlet not far from Eastbourne. I found the place incredibly exciting visually, and was able to produce many drawings there, which i re-worked extensively in the studio, on larger pieces of paper. When I begun painting, I held these images in mind, but allowed the painting to take on its own imagery and space, drawing from memory and imagination as well as the roots of imagery in the skecthbooks.
