Before beginning this painting i drew extensively in the landscape, specifically the in the area of Birling Gap, a tiny cliffside Hamlet not far from Eastbourne. I took my drawing back to the studio where I re-worked them until the images produced took on a more abstract and metaphorical quality. I begun this painting with these images in mind, but I also let my memory and imagination of the places I had drawn from influence the work. The painting is rooted in a real place, but through the painterly process ,it has reached into a new interior space of its own.
