Mediated Childhood

Mediated Childhood

Although looking like selfies, these are in fact hi-res composite portraits, with the deliberately posed subjects situated in the frame of a mirror during post-production.

With this project I wanted to explore contemporary issues raised by the ubiquity of digital photography in the networked age. Whilst we generally accept this as a harmless phenomenon, I hope to draw attention to how we use images (particularly now the selfie) to mediate our sense of identity. Does this socialise the individual earlier in life? Better? More cohesively? More judgmentally? Transposing this work from its native virtual realm (low fidelity and disposable) to a printed substrate (high fidelity and reified), I hope to further heighten this challenge to the viewer.
