Red Sky in the Morning...
The peace-full wading of a flock of some of nature's most beautiful and seemingly harmless-looking birds, is soon to be to disturbed by unseen forces: the ominous tempest that's about to sweep them off their feet. The sense of menace is conveyed by the work's title, the fiery red sky, the chiaroscuro (light and dark) effects of the sunlight that's diffused through the dark cloud that obscures the flamingos' heads.
While it captures an air of nostalgic reverie this fleeting early-morning scene serves as a vehicle of the artist's deepest sentiments, as they evolve from the onset of the work to its completion, whilst she layered gossamer-thin veils of color one by one atop of each other. Whatever the intended meaning, a determining unseen force seems to be controlling the narrative that transmutes from enchanted idyll, a fantasy of pastoral beauty, to the cosmic catastrophy that's about to engulf it.
