This painting, entitled "The River of Sorrows" features a grieving figure who mourns at the edge of the River of Sorrows. From within the deep waters there emerge mysterious grasping hands. What occurs at this place? Does one unburden oneself at this place of suffering? Does one gain wisdom from misfortune, which in turn leads one to help others? Does the woman in the painting manage to save someone who is perhaps drowning in the river? Or, per chance, is she pulled under by the waiting hands? To what end? Each of us is presented with opportunity to visit the River of Sorrows. What happens there is left for the viewer, or sufferer, to decide.
