Installation, Political / Social, Textile, 61x57x2cm
The piece is constructed out of used bed sheets and mattress stuffing. Using a template the first bird was cut out the second bird was cut from the first, the third from the second and so on. The shapes of the birds changed and deformed creating an unsettling undertone to, what is at first glance, an initially "pretty" piece of work. I use domestic fabrics and materials and a traditionally feminine technique such as sewing in a slightly subversive way to challenge the viewer’s perception of roles. The work is intrinsically autobiographical and, perhaps more than anything, challenges my perception of myself and my place in the world.
