Allegory of Life

'Allegory of Life' is a pen and ink drawing on silk paper. As the title says the drawing refers to life in its universality. Every detail of the drawing can be read as a meaningful part in relation to the complete work. There are references to 'time': a bearded man with a stick. On his stick you'll find a skull, an egg and a cold shower. All three of them refer to parts of life, birth, life in a Nietzschean, almost meaningless perspective and death. You'll find a chicken as symbol of madness that picks grain out of the vagina of a character. There is a swan (as symbol of love) that is penetrated by a sword. You'll also find a struggle between two characters as central focus in the work. Next to that there is a cross that is reinvented as an object of joy... The work is completely organised, using the golden section. As you'll notice, the cross is not entirely in the middle of the work. Though there is a kind of symmetry. Two Oriental female figures look like each others mirror image. The drawing process was like a growing process. Starting from the figures in the front the image kept on gaining reality. That's the main way my drawings arise: I see my drawing process as a nomadic growth as philosophically described by Rosi Braidotti and Gilles Deleuze.
