Like a Knife

Like a Knife

She felt very young; at the same time unspeakably aged. She sliced like a knife through everything; at the same time was outside, looking on. She had a perpetual sense, as she watched the taxi cabs, of being out, out, far out to sea and alone; she always had the feeling that it was very, very dangerous to live even one day.
Virginia Wolf, Mrs. Dalloway

A few years ago, I submitted by mistake an already used black and white film to a second exposure. The streets of Paris, the Canal Saint Martin, the passerby, the visitors to the museum, the windows, the crowd, the squares and the bars were superimposed to the Sternenfall (Falling Stars) touching exhibition of Anselm Kiefer, that I had photographed at the Grand Palais.
Dedicated to Ingeborg Bachmann and Paul Celan, the "ateliers-fabrique" built by Kiefer for Monumenta 2007 were conceived as an area of "sedimentation" of mnemonic material, which collide with the "open" space of the Grand Palais, where the roof of transparent glass allows it to be both an interior and an exterior. Kiefer builds bare walls or cubic buildings provided with always open doors, ready to be eye-frames through which we can observe what is around in a different way. Critics have often pointed out how difficult it is, and often sterile, photographing these works of Kiefer in a didascalic manner. Here, an error allowed me to pay homage to his work in an unexpected perspective: Kiefer emerge from the urban area, an extraordinary "box of memories", and slice through Paris like a knife.
