In this interpretation of the myth of Sisyphus the struggle is not against the mindless nature of the rock but rather a struggle against fear. Fear seems to be the principle verb of the 20th and early 21st centuries. In its variant forms, afraid, frightened, it has become the dominate qualifier within the general lexicon of everyday speech. To liberate oneself from fear is to gain freedom, existential freedom.
