Silent Voices, the grave of Oscar Wylde, Cimetiere Du Pere Lachaise, Monday 10th November 2008, 11.

Painting, Minimal, Symbol / Letter, Acrylic, 90.5x100x0.3cm
The stone marking the grave of Oscar Wylde is shrouded with many lip marks. The five sets of lips in the work were recorded on the date in the title. These document the personal feelings (silent voices) of the authors, placed into the world for an audience with humanity. Confronted with mortality the viewer eavesdrops their own silent voices as they makes sense of the relationships between our adulation of greatness, celebrity, and feelings of longing, hope and despair. These intense feelings when articulated are diminished; the lips enable us to better hear the ‘silent voices’ within.
