Chaplin's first talking picture, The Great Dictator (1940), was an act of defiance against Nazism. It was filmed and released in the United States one year before the U.S. entry into World War II. Chaplin played the role of „Adenoid Hynkel“, Dictator of Tomainia, modeled on German dictator Adolf Hitler, who was only four days his junior and sported a similar moustache.
