Cortiços (Tenement Houses)
In November 2005 an extensive action of inspection was initiated that notified over 1.000 tenement houses properties in the city center of São Paulo.
The Municipal Housing Secretariat, in partnership with the Subprefeituras Sé and Mooca, in an area of approximately 61,4 square kilometers, has implemented the Program of Cortiços, consisting primarily on a differentiated tenement supervision, plus information on social, educational and awareness issues.
The Program of Cortiços reached a large scale intervention, promoting improvements in more than 450 tenements, of which 73 buildings were completely refurbished and 94 were closed down to its residents by the present life-threatening conditions.
In total, approximately 8,250 families experience quality improvements of the tenement buildings, while other 1,520 families were sent to the housing programs of the Housing Urban Development Company (CDHU) in retrofit’s realized in São Paulo downtown
