port meadow
In return for helping to defend the kingdom against the Danes, the Freemen of Oxford were given the 300 acres of pasture next to the River Thames by Alfred the Great.
In 1862 Charles Dodgson (aka Lewis Carroll) rowed in a boat up this bit of river with three young girls — Lorina, Alice, and Edith Liddell. While journeying Dodgson began at their request to make up a story that later was expanded into Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
I used to walk my dog,Luca, on the Meadow, and one day after a walk, he appeared unsteady.Unbeknownst to me he had run off and ingested poison, which some rough sleepers had left, to keep away the rats, and his system shut down.In was in the aftermath of his passing that I began this series.
What I was exploring in this series is the deep connection that man can have with a piece of land, and similarly the ancient and indissoluble bond that one can have with a dog.
