the forsaken

A project that follows my continuing search for beauty in all the wrong places.

My newest series “the forsaken” follows my love affair with some of the abandoned, historic ranches of the high desert and their environs. These lonely ranches were originally built when the west was first settled. Being good friends with the founding Clyde family, the Earp clan (including Wyatt) built a few of the original structures, one of which is still standing.

Since I last worked on this project, the ranches have fallen on hard times, suffering a couple of devastating fires, repeated vandalism, and the last remaining owner occupant was gored to death by his own pet buffalo. I still find them transcendentally beautiful, a metaphor for solitude, and a reflection of our poor stewardship of our earth. I hope to capture the essence of these historic places before they are gone forever and no one realizes what has been lost.

“Solitude, though it may be silent as light, is like light, the mightiest of agencies; for solitude is essential to man. All men come into this world alone and leave it alone.” Thomas de Quincey (1785-1859) British author and intellectual.
