The Photo's Photo

Digital Photography, Human figure, Digital, 38x42cm
In 1981 four students at the Academy of Arts from Bucharest, under the Ceausescu communist regime, created an unusual hairstyle. We photographed ten shots while doing it. We were discreet as shooting in public was quite obnoxious back then. But we found pleasure in being mysterious even for no apparent reason.

Ten years later in 1991, I reviewed the pictures and I’ve realized that life has scattered the four of us throughout the world. Then I wrote on the back of the tenth photo: “this has to be our last joyful day together”.

In 2012 I organized my photos, I added dates to each one, I commented them, I made a little fun of them, and then I photographed them and made the photo's photo. The first five pictures are made in the streets and at the fruit market. The apparent features of the epoch are memorized in the pictures. In the next five photos we hid in a small park. I.C.Bratianu’s wife built this garden in 1937. (Bratianu was an important Romanian politician in the interwar; but communists renamed the park as Ilie Pintilie - a comrade communist). Unlike the first batch of photos, the ones in the park say almost nothing about the times in which we lived; and in a mysterious way, precisely these pictures acquired a sepia tone over time.
